Seek Out the Good

“He who earnestly seeks good finds favor, but trouble will come to him who seeks evil.” (Proverbs 11:27 NKJV)

In this scripture, we see that this Proverb is not exclusive to any one group of people. You don’t have to qualify based on your income, have a certain level of education, hold a certain status within the community, or be of a certain age group or ethnic background. It is for, “He who earnestly seeks…”. This statement makes it very inclusive to all who carry it out.

Earnestly in Hebrew means to look early or diligently. Isn’t it interesting that the seeking should be done early? This doesn’t necessarily mean early as in the morning, but more so early in your circumstance, early in your situation. If you are heading to a doctor’s appointment don’t wait until you receive a bad medical report to seek out the good, determine to pursue the good before you ever receive the medical report. Seek early. Before you get the news that you are being laid off, don’t get discouraged, don’t get stressed out about what this means for your finances, instead seek out the good in the circumstance early. Maybe you’ll find a position with better pay, better benefits. Maybe the new job is a promotion or perhaps it gives you some free time to pursue things you couldn’t before because of your work schedule. Seek the good in every situation.

Our focus scripture also outlines consequences based on what we decide to do. If we earnestly seek good, we will find favor. If we seek evil, trouble will come to us. Notice the stark distinction between the two choices we have. If we seek good, WE FIND favor. If we seek evil, trouble FINDS US.

How are you positioning yourself? Are you positioned to be found by trouble? Always complaining, seeing the bad in all circumstances, always focused on the negative? Or are you positioned to find favor, which is the undeserved partiality you are given over others?

“My son [daughter], pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” (Prov. 4:20-22)

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for always giving me the freedom to choose. I choose to look at the less than favorable circumstances from a supernatural perspective knowing that your hand of grace is on those things too; ultimately working them out for my good. Keep me from trouble as I seek the good. In Jesus’s name. Amen!
